9. Clean marble floors
- Use gentle cleaning soap that does not have a grease remover.
- The safest course is to take it easy.
- Mix about two tablespoons of mild liquid soap, ivory, for instance in four litres of water.
- Using a soft sponge or a sponge mop if you are cleaning a marble floor, wipe the marble clean.
- Follow with two to three water rinses, depending in how soapy the cleaning mixture is.
- Dry with a soft cloth
Clean marble floors regularly, before dirt and grit have a chance to scratch the surface. Wipe up spills immediately. As with a wood surface, avoid putting drinks glasses directly on marble, which can cause water rings. Water should bead on the marble. If the surface appears to be absorbing liquid, it's not sealed properly.
Reseal your marble floor annually at least - it's an easy as waxing a floor:
- Buy a stone sealer from a DIY store.
- Take a sponge, sponge mop or and cover the entire marble surface, including corners.
- There's no need to strip the floor before you seal.
10. Clean surface stains
- Use a marble polishing powder, such as tin oxide, which is available at DIY stores.
- Follow the product's directions to the letter.
- If the marble item you are cleaning is stained, but not of great value, you can try removing them with a thick paste made of baking soda and water.
- Apply the paste to the stain. Cover the paste with a sheet of plastic to keep the paste damp and let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes before wiping it off.
- Rinse with warm water and fry.
- Repeat the procedure if the first application doesn't fully remove the stain. If stains still remain, you will have to call on the expertise of a professional marble restorer (Home Cleaning).
11. Clean laminated floors
- Keep in mind that like wood, it should not be mopped by slopping lots of water around on the floor (laminated is the man-made flooring that comes in tongue-and-groove planks that often simulate wood).
- Don't use ammonia, solvents, abrasives, general-purpose cleaners, polishes or waxes on laminate. Despite these restrictions laminate is easy to clean.
- If laminate gets scratched, you may be able to buy a touch-stick from the manufacturer. With severe damage, you may be able to replace a plank or two - especially if you have laid the floor yourself and have a few off-cuts put by.
